主题简介:Traditionally, engineering is a profession that translate scientific discoveries into useful technologies. In research, however, the advancement of knowledge at present is such that the boundary between science and engineering is becoming increasingly vague. Many engineering professionals are in fact conducting research in domains of basic science and vice versa. In the other end of the spectrum, most industry driven engineering research is still taking the empirical or try-and-error approach, which is very restrictive and can only lead to incremental improvements. In this presentation, I will use two examples (microparticle production and acid mist suppression) to illustrate the different approaches that are used in engineering research and argue that engineering professionals are better equipped to conduct translational research than discovery type of basic science research. To be effective, however, engineering research must make full use of basic scientific principles.
