Abstract:
Dielectric elastomers exhibit high actuation strain, pressure, and specific energy density, reproducing much of the functions of muscle. I will discuss the chemical and processing aspects that are critical to achieving high actuation performance. Successful examples include (1) the development of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) in which the one polymer network is under high tension balanced by compression of an additive network; (2) new elastomers with a specifically designed stress-strain response to overcome electromechanical instability; and (3) ultrathin SWCNT electrodes for self-clearing and enhanced actuation stability. I will also present a bistable electroactive polymer, a rigid polymer that is capable of electrically actuated strains greater than 200%. One unique application of the BSEP is for refreshable Braille display, an electronic reader for the blind.

He specializes in electronic polymers, polymer light emitting diodes, electromechanically transducing polymers and devices, with over 120 peer-reviewed journal publications and 39 issued US patents. His current research activities include stretchable polymer electronics, nanostructured composites, and dielectric elastomers for actuation and power generation. Dr. Pei received a B.S. degree from Nanjing University, China, and a PhD from the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing. He was a postdoctoral scientist during 1991-1993 in Link?ping University, Sweden, a senior chemist 1994-1997 at UNIAX Corporation (now DuPont Display), Santa Barbara, and a senior research engineer 1998-2004 at SRI International, Menlo Park, California. He has been on the UCLA faculty since 2004. He was named a Fellow of the SPIE in 2012.
